But it costs a lot in the terms of the health of women and children along with the harm done to the environment.

Prolonged exposure to the fumes and smoke of these fuels causes multiple diseases such as heart diseases, lung cancer, pulmonary diseases, risk of stroke, acute respiratory diseases, and so on.

In the case of kids, there can be hampered growth leading to many health issues.

There can be deaths in the case of young kids due to lack of oxygen to the lungs in time.

What is the problem to be tackled?

Fossil fuels have been used for ages now, but the bad effects have only accumulated and not reduced.

In the rural area where the source of income is very limited, the people are still using these old and unsafe fuels to cook food.

According to the WHO, there have been almost 5 Lakh deaths in the country of India due to the use of these fuels.

The bad effect of being exposed to one hour of such smoke from cooking is equal to the bad effect of 400 cigarettes together.

As a result, there have been deaths due to lung cancer, respiratory diseases, and heart issues.

There have been deaths among very young kids too due to the same reason.

Pradhanmantri Ujjawala Yojna is step towards addressing these issues.

What is Pradhanmantri Ujjawala Yojna

Pradhanmantri Ujjawala Yojna is an initiative by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

This scheme is bound to benefit as many as 5 crore women or households with an investment of rupees 8000 crores for this purpose.

This scheme has reached and impacted the women directly. The women have been empowered and the risk factor related to their health has been reduced.

The time spent cooking has also decreased. The associated time of cleaning the house has reduced too; as the LPG does not have residue.

The provision of the supply chain of this LPG has helped generate jobs for the youth at all levels, especially the rural level.

Who all can apply for Pradhanmantri Ujjawala Yojna scheme?

Although, any adult woman from a poor background can apply for this LPG connection at subsidized rates.

She must belong to the low-income section and hold a valid BPL card. All the beneficiaries are listed under the SECC list.

All the SC/ST who have been registered under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna Gramin. Forest dwellers and tribes are also eligible for this connection.

What will they receive under Pradhanmantri Ujjawala Yojna?

Under the Pradhanmantri Ujjawala Yojna , five crore new subsidized connections have been provided to the BPL households.

Under this scheme, each applicant is given Rupees 1600 as financial support, interest-free to buy the stove and get it refilled from the Oil marketing company.

For rupees 1600 they are given one cylinder, booklet, safety hose, pressure regulator, etc. which is paid by the government.

What is the process of Pradhanmantri Ujjawala Yojna?

A woman who does not hold an LPG connection in her name currently and belongs to the BPL household can apply.

She must fill up a form and submit to the LPG distributor which suits her according to the area of supply.

Details such as bank account details, Aadhar Number, address, and BPL card details have to be furnished with proof along with the form.

The LPG officer shall tally and verify the details in the SECC-2011 list with him for the area.

He will verify the BPL status and then approve the permission to give the subsidized connection.

The Pradhanmantri Ujjawala Yojna has the aim of Clean fuel Better life. This will help empower women and improve their health conditions.

Also, in difficult terrains like high hills where the women have to carry woods for long distances, this scheme is very beneficial and proves to be a lifesaver.

It will reduce pollution in the environment overall due to the reduced usage of fossil fuels. Anyone who has not been enrolled in any such scheme can avail of the benefits of this scheme.
