Many of us are not fortunate enough to pursue further education like graduation or post graduation. This can be for various reasons like financial trouble or inaccessible education etc. But many of us always have a desire to study. Open Universities are one such way to full fill our education dreams.

What are Open Universities

As per Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource and Development, Govt Of India, Open Universities are ones which are established to cater the education needs of people who are not able to pursue courses due to various reasons. These Universities follow a distance learning system in which teachers are students are not necessarily needed at the same place.

Open universities are established with a purpose .. i,e

  • They are affordable to all.
  • Provide equal opportunity to everyone to pursue higher studies
  • No entry age barrier for courses
  • All courses are in distance learning mode. Hence no need to attend campus. Making it easy for people who are in Job.
  • Relaxed entry criteria – Making the education accessible to all and giving opportunity to every one to improve their knowledge and skills.
  • Server people in remote locations where education is not accessible. Since the education delivery is either by post or online it becomes easy for students from remote location to access it.
  • All the degrees are UGC approved and Universities are UGC recognised
  • No limit on no. os students intake.
  • Provide opportunity to learners who have gap in their education due to various reasons.
  • Students can join any open university from anywhere.

What kind of courses open universities offer

Remember open universities are like regular universities but with only a single mode of education i.e distance learning and hence they offer same / similar courses as regular universities. There may be many private open universities in India , but if you are planning to do a course from open universities, look for the ones approved and listed by Ministry of Human Resource and Development.

These universities are UGC approved and they provide all the regular degrees like

  • Graduation degree (Bsc, Bcom, BA, BBA, BE, BTECH etc)
  • Master Degree (Msc, Mcom, MA, MBA, MCA , MTECH etc)
  • Various Diploma and Post Graduate Diploma courses
  • Various certificate and short term courses

Are degree from Open Universities recognized?

Any university whether regular or Open University, if approved by UGC have their degree recognized.

As per MHRD website, there is IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) and 13 state open universities setup by respective state governments and are fully recognized by UGC and hence any degree from these universities are fully recognized and is valid for any government or private job.
